Sleep needs

Sleep patterns will change

Sleep patterns will change over the first year of a baby’s life, including the number of hours of sleep needed and the duration of sleep periods throughout the day and night.

Sleep charts are definitely not the last word on baby sleep requirements. To estimate your baby’s own, individualised needs, you need to supplement information from sleep charts together with your own observations of your baby’s behaviour.

Newborn to 1 month: Remember, There’s a wide range of “normal” sleep. Every baby has different sleep needs, but the typical range in the first month is 16-20 hours of sleep over a 24-hour day.

1 to 4 months: A healthy baby in this age range should get a total of about 14 to 17 hours of sleep over a 24-hour day, broken into shorter periods to accommodate feeding, diaper changes, and interaction with their family. Breastfed infants usually need to eat more frequently than bottle-fed infants, about every 2 hours versus every 3 hours.

4 to 7 months: Starting at around 4 months of age, an infant’s daily sleep needs drop to 13 to 16 hours. Around this time, sleep also starts consolidating into longer periods, as babies are able to go longer without feeding. Also your baby’s sleep patterns will finally join the rest of the family’s routine as he’ll start sleeping more at night and less during the day.

7 to 11 months: A baby in this age range should get a total of about 12 to 15 hours of sleep over a 24-hour day. From 6 months onward, babies do the bulk of their sleeping at night. Overnight stretches may reach 10 to 12 hours, and naps will consolidate from three to two. However, other issues such as teething, growth spurts, illnesses, or sleep regressions may start leading to nighttime awakenings. Parents may opt to use Supersleeper sleep-training method if babies aren’t sleeping through the night at this stage.

11 to 12 months +: Total daily sleep needs drop to around 12 - 14 hours over a 24-hour day. After 12 months you can expect to drop another nap. But the time when this happens is dictated by your baby. Usually nap drops around 15 – 16 months, but can happen anytime between 12 to 20 months.
